Can Obesity shorten your life? That’s what we have been told and read about but I have been reading the news recently about how obesity can shorten your life by 10 years and the dangers associated with being obese. There’s also another contradictory article about Being Slim is not in!
Being obese in some cases can be as bad as smoking, so should obese smokers forget about quitting altogether!? I read about how the obese are also more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc as age catches up. You can read all about it here.
However there is this contradictory article that says slim is not in if you have had a stroke. Those who have a low BMI had a higher mortality rate that patients who are overweight and even obese! Doesn’t this contradict what we have been hearing about fatter people being in the higher risk group of dying from heart and other diseases?
There are different BMI chart to follow depending if you are Caucasian or Asian. Asians are at greater risk compared to Caucasians with similar BMI because an Asian have more body fat compared to a Caucasian of similar build.
Based on the articles, I summarized that BMI is not created equal. Besides BMI which is often used as rule of thumb to gauge “fatness and obesity”, it does not measure body fat percentage. What is this! Another factor to take into consideration?
Well rather than try to figure out can obesity shorten your life and by how much, trying to calculate what’s your BMI and body fat percentage to see where you fit in, counting your calories, etc don’t you think it’s better to get on with life without further worrying? Life is short, live it to the fullest.
However, if you are interested in getting your weight down, in my opinion, it’s better to focus on ideal weight management than weight loss, maintaining a healthy weight and building muscle mass.
